The Dream Team lived up to the hype last week as they only gave up 10 points to a New York Giants team that has been averaging close to 23 points a game! The Eagles brought home a much needed win in week 11 and they did it without Michael Vick behind center but can they do it again this week against the Patriots? Is Michael Vick overpaid? Of course he is but Vince Young is underpaid so it all evens itself out doesn’t it Philly fans? Regardless, that is beside the point, the Patriots are averaging the 2nd most points in the league with 29 per game, but putting up that many points this week may no be so easy.
If you are Tom Brady you must know you have to play perfect each week in order to keep up with your defense which is surrendering more passing yards each week to their opponents than any other team in the league but you have to wonder about his confidence of carrying the full load in this week’s battle. The secondary for the Patriots hasn’t changed much all season long and to make matters worse, starting cornerback Devin McCourty and starting strong safety Patrick Chung have been downgraded from questionable to out in this week’s matchup. Vince Young shouldn’t have any problems moving the ball all day long but to counter this, the Patriots need to run the ball efficiently and consistently. Also, the Patriots need to tighten up on third down and force the Eagles to kick field goals when scoring opportunities present themselves.
The Patriots aren’t going to rely on the Eagles to shoot themselves in the foot so they need to take care of the ball and manage the game clock better than they have done all season long if they want to come out of Lincoln Financial Field with a win. Coach Belichick said earlier this week that rookie running back Shane Vareen has earned more time and is explosive enough to provide a spark for the offense. However, Vareen may be too raw to rely on all game but it would be nice to see a balanced attack from the Patriots offense regardless. Danny Woodhead, Stevan Ridley, Kevin Faulk, and BenJarvus Green-Ellis are all capable of moving the ball on an Eagles run defense which is letting up 4.5 yards a carry. It is definitely going to be tough sledding for the Patriots as they go up against the Philadelphia Eagles who are rallying around Vince Young who seems to be resurrecting his career. Believe it or not, but if Michael Vick was behind center this week I would favor the Patriots, but he’s not! I see Vince Young going on a two-game win streak and leading his team to a win in week 12. I see the Eagles winning this one, 23-20.
