The Patriots had their hands full in week 14 in unexpected shootout against the 4-8 Redskins. The Patriots usually force opposing team to put up plenty of yards when playing against them in order to keep up and that’s exactly what the Redskins did.
Rex Grossman led his team to a season high, 463 total yards of offense and did it without offensive tackle Trent Williams and tight end Fred Davis in the lineup. Grossman looked terrible as usual to start as he was stripped of the football in the first quarter where Vince Wilfork recovered it in the end zone for a score, but then he started to step up. Rex threw for two touchdowns and spread the ball around to seven different receivers to keep up with the high flying Patriots throughout the game and the Shanahans dialed up a successful 49 yard trick play from Brandon Banks to Santana Moss that led to a score on a reverse pass. It was Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski who stole the show however. Gronkowski also known as “The Gronk,” broke the record for most touchdowns scored by a tight end in a season with 15 and also made the play of the game on a 49 yard catch, fall, get up, sideline tight rope, and run which set himself up with a touchdown reception to end a two play scoring drive in the first quarter. The game was far from over at that point and it was still anyone's game.
It was until the fourth quarter where the Patriots had a chance to be up two scores but made a huge mistake. Brady threw a costly interception in the back of the end zone which allowed the Redskins to remain in the game!Down only seven points, the Redskins had the ball with six minutes and thirty seconds left to go in the game and drove down the field on a 13 play drive. Threatening to score with twenty nine seconds left in the game, Grossman finds Santana Moss over the middle but Moss can’t hold onto it! Moss bobbles the catch at the five yard line; the ball flips up in the air and Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo is there to make a diving game clinching interception! The play was reviewed, confirmed, and the Patriots went home with a win and clinched the AFC East. The Patriots could have played better football and plan on doing so in the next few games before the start of the playoffs. The New England Patriots (10-3) will travel to Mile High Stadium to take on Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos (8-5) in week 15.
