The Jets Darrelle Revis called Patriots coach Bill Belichick a jerk on ESPN last week.
New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis and New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski threw some fuel on the fire of the Jets Patriots rivalry with some biting comments about each other's coach and quarterback during a joint appearance on ESPN last week.
The rivalry between Gang Green and the Pats is already a towering inferno of mutual hatred (....er...I....mean professional respect) so, this latest round of comments is probably not going to have any noticeable effects, but the word play between Revis and Gronkowski wasn't exactly friendly – them be fighting words.
Revis and Gronkowski were playing a word association game together on "SportsCenter" last Wednesday. During the game Revis was asked to say the first word that came to mind when he thinks of Patriots coach Bill Belichick, the normally tight lipped Revis couldn't resist and replied "jerk." He quickly explained that feeling was because of "just some of the comments he says about the Jets."
Gronkowski was asked the same thing about the Jets coach Rex Ryan and responded in a slightly kinder fashion. "Entertainer" he said of Ryan. But, Gronkowski didn't exactly take the high road throughout the game. Asked what the first thing that comes to mind when he thinks of Tim Tebow (the newly anointed Jets back-up quarterback) Gronkowski said, "starting quarterback for the Jets," an obvious dig towards current Jets starter Mark Sanchez.
In the end it was a fun segment and I don't think either Gronkowski or Revis meant any harm. Both were saying what was actually on their minds which is something that I love to see. And let's be honest, Ryan can be something of an entertainer and while Belichick is probably a great guy off the field you don't get a real warm and cuddly feeling from him on the field – seriously I bet he bought "How to Make Friends and Influence" people and ripped out the portion on making friends.
What do you think? Is Belichick a jerk? Is Ryan an entertainer? Were Revis and Gronkowski out of line? And most importantly will Tim Tebow be the Jets starting quarterback by year's end?
